One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories by B.J. Novak

I promise you haven’t read short stories like these.

One More Thing is a madcap collection of mostly satirical short stories covering everything from fractured fairytales to modern dating to family dynamics to politics and religion and historical events of questionable integrity. B.J. Novak, of The Office fame, has an unmistakable and engaging voice, which he uses to craft a gloriously ridiculous romp that ranges from scathing social commentary to absurdity that’s just plain fun.

The stories are short and easily digestible, great to read one at a time in between engagements or all in a row with a good snack for a chill night in. Some stories are no more than half a page, some are upwards of ten pages, some utilize callbacks in unexpected and entertaining ways, some come with discussion questions that are occasionally funnier than the story itself. The book plays with short story form and tradition in very refreshing ways, and while, like any short story collection, I find myself more drawn to some stories than others, the collection as a whole holds together beautifully.

The audiobook is also incredible and has a whole host of famous narrators.

Vibe: A crowded and lively row of carnival games. Checking to see if you have something in your teeth in the middle of Grand Central Station. That regular at the bar with a twinkle in his eye who’s always good for a story and tells it so well you stop caring if it’s true or not.
